Gambling firm 888 have promised to do more to help under threat gamblers during the United Kingdom’s lockdown period.

Current figures in the wake of the recent COVID-19 pandemic show that those who do gamble online are now switching from their usual wagers to far more riskier ones, with there being little-to-no sporting action to bet on.

All major sports in the United Kingdom such as football, horse racing and cricket have all been ground to a halt, leaving those who like to have a flutter on sport left with little else to bet on.

That in turn has already seen players try their hand at different gaming options such as casino and poker games as they look for something to fill the void of the disrupted sporting action.

888 said: “There is currently evidence of increased customer activity in the group’s casino and poker products that might, in part, compensate for the sports betting disruption for a period of time.”

On the welfare and support to their players, the company added: “The board recognises that, with people spending more time at home and with potentially increased stress from economic uncertainty, 888’s vigilance on safe gambling and preventing gambling-related harm is even more important than ever.

“The group continues to offer its customers support and is proactively communicating with its customers to make them aware of safe gambling tools to limit and control their play.”

MPs have already called for a daily deposit cap of £50 to be placed by bookmakers on their customers that is yet to be answered. Labour’s Carolyn Harris, the Conservatives’ Iain Duncan Smith and the SNP’s Ronnie Cowan all wrote to the Betting & Gaming Council in a cross-party letter suggesting the changes be made with people set to spend a significant amount of time indoors.

Over half a million banking customers have blocked payments from their personal account to their betting account as they prepare for the upcoming time spent at home.
